Healthy, nutritious and culturally appropriate food for all
The Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium (ESFSAC) is a growing alliance dedicated to transforming Ethiopia’s food systems with agroecology at their core. We are driven by the belief that food security, good nutrition, and environmental resilience are not just technical challenges — they are deeply rooted in local knowledge, cultural heritage, and community-led action. Working in partnership with civil-society organizations, activists, smallholder farmers, and youth across Ethiopia, ESFSAC promotes sustainable farming, protects indigenous seed varieties and biodiversity, and defends the rights of farmers and pastoralists as custodians of Ethiopia’s food heritage.
Through a combination of advocacy, storytelling, research, education, and strategic collaboration, ESFSAC turns this vision into concrete action. We produce media and public-education campaigns that celebrate indigenous food traditions and healthy, locally appropriate diets; we support transdisciplinary research to uncover and promote contextually relevant agroecological solutions; and we work to integrate agroecology into school curricula from primary through tertiary levels. Complementing this work, ESFSAC created the “Youth in Agroecology Startup Competition,” an initiative that empowers young innovators to build sustainable, food-system solutions grounded in their communities — promoting entrepreneurship, indigenous food promotion, and food sovereignty among Ethiopia’s youth.
These organizations are members of the Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium (ESFSAC). With a common vision and objective, we work together to promote agroecological practices and foster healthy food systems in Ethiopia through multi-stakeholder linkages, sharing of knowledge and experience for joint learning, collaboration and collective action.
