Women in Agroecology Network

Why the Women in Agroecology Network Matter?

Women play a foundational role in Ethiopia’s food systems—from seed saving, land preparation, planting, and harvesting, to food preparation, processing, marketing, and knowledge transfer. They are custodians of agroecological practices and indigenous wisdom that ensure food diversity, nutrition, climate resilience, and cultural continuity.

Despite this, women remain largely invisible in national dialogues, policies, and leadership structures within the agroecology and food systems sectors. Their wisdom is undocumented, their voices underrepresented, and their contributions undervalued.

The Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium (ESFSAC) aims to raise the voice of women, promote their agroecological knowledge and leadership, and create space for dialogue, visibility, and advocacy through storytelling, digital platforms, and in-person learning events through this platform as well as its research and documentation work.
