YASC 2026 Update: Evaluation and Due Diligence Underway

The Youth in Agroecology Startup Competition (YASC) 2026 has reached an exciting stage as we continue selection process following the close of applications.

The evaluation process is currently near completion, with an independent panel of judges reviewing each eligible application against the competition’s assessment criteria. In parallel, ESFSAC is also conducting due diligence to verify the information submitted by applicants as part of the overall selection process.

During the application period, 90 youth-led startups successfully completed the application requirements by submitting both a one-minute introductory video and a completed online application form.

The competition attracted applicants from across Addis Ababa and Sheger City, demonstrating strong interest from young entrepreneurs working in agroecology and sustainable food systems. Of the successful applicants, 72 (80%) were from Addis Ababa and 18 (20%) from Sheger City. Within Addis Ababa, all sub-cities were represented, with the highest number of applications coming from Yeka (14 applicants), followed by Lemi Kura (12), Bole (11) and Nifas Silk-Lafto (8).

The applicant pool also reflected encouraging diversity. Male applicants accounted for 64 (71%) of the total, while 26 (29%) were female. Although men formed the majority, the participation of nearly one-third female entrepreneurs highlights the growing engagement of young women in agroecology, indigenous food promotion and sustainable food systems.

Applicants also demonstrated a strong educational background. More than 71% had already completed a university degree or higher, including 48 degree holders (53.3%) and 16 applicants (17.8%) with a master’s degree or above. In addition, 20 applicants (22.2%) were current college or university students, while a smaller number had diploma or high school qualifications.

We will announce the top-10 shortlisted finalists who will advance to the next stage of the competition in the coming days. Mentorship and coaching session for shortlisted startups is organized on 13-14 August in Addis Ababa, while the Pitch Competition Day is scheduled for 21 August.

We sincerely thank all applicants for their enthusiasm and patience. Please continue to follow our website and social media channels for further updates.
