Telba Fitfit is a traditional Ethiopian fasting food made from roasted and finely ground flaxseed (telba) prepared into a thick, spiced paste and mixed with pieces of injera. The scientific name of telba is Linum usitatissimum). Telba is especially common during Ethiopian Orthodox fasting seasons, when animal-source foods are avoided and plant-based meals take center stage.
Traditionally, telba fitfit is valued for being deeply nourishing, filling, and gentle on the body. It is often prepared for breakfast, as a side dish for main meals or as a sustaining meal during long fasting days, providing strength and warmth while remaining simple and affordable. Its soft texture and rich flavor make telba fitfit comforting and easy to consume.
Nutritionally, telba fitfit is rich in healthy fats (omega-3 fatty acids), plant-based protein, and dietary fiber, supporting heart health, digestion, and long-lasting satiety. Flaxseed also contains important minerals such as magnesium and iron, while injera adds complex carbohydrates that provide steady energy. Being a whole grain product, telba fifit is rich in fiber and sometimes consumed for its medicinal value, for example, as a remedial and/or neutralizing gastric acidity and overcome constipation.
As a fully plant-based dish, minimally processed meal, telba fitfit is delicious and reflects Ethiopia’s indigenous fasting foods that nourish both the body and food traditions.
