Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium

What We Do

The Ethiopian Sustainable Food System and Agroecology Consortium (ESFSAC) works to strengthen partnerships and mobilise collective action to transform Ethiopia’s food systems. Our key activities include:

Advocacy, Policy & Public Engagement

We work to build strong, cross-sectoral alliances that position food as a central issue across health, education, environment, and agriculture. Through community platforms, public dialogues, and national campaigns, we raise awareness, shape inclusive narratives, and promote policies that support food sovereignty, sustainable farming, and Ethiopia’s rich bio-cultural heritage.

Storytelling, Media & Public Education

We produce compelling stories, visuals, and communication tools that highlight best practices in agroecology and sustainable food systems. Through case studies, documentaries, radio and TV broadcasts, and print materials, we counter harmful narratives, raise public awareness, and promote culturally rooted, nutritious foods that reflect Ethiopia’s rich food heritage.

Participatory & Innovative Research

We foster inclusive, transdisciplinary research that values the knowledge of farmers and pastoralists while encouraging collaboration across academic and practical fields. By co-creating knowledge and exploring new uses of local food resources, we support the development of appropriate technologies and context-driven solutions that strengthen sustainable food systems from production to distribution.

Agroecology in Education

We advocate for the integration of agroecology into school curricula from primary to tertiary levels. This ensures that younger students develop an early understanding of food systems and local biodiversity, while university students engage in action-oriented research and contribute innovative solutions for producers, processors, and food distributors.

Stakeholder Synergy & Collaboration

We strengthen coordination among stakeholders and partners by fostering shared strategies, open dialogue, and collective learning. By building synergy across sectors and communities, we enhance the impact of agroecological initiatives and accelerate the transition towards sustainable, inclusive food systems.
