Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium

Towards agroecology-based sustainable food systems

By 2050, the Ethiopian population is expected to reach 2500Million an there is a need to feed these. Based on business a usual production, the food gap is estimated to be 1.5 Metric tons. On the other hand, there is food insecurity and malnutrition are prevalent in both rural and urban areas.

Therefore, it is critical that we transform our agricultural and food systems so that these become resilient to climate change and also complement, rather than competing with nature. Agroecology focuses on ecosystem-based approaches that can assist in revitalizing agricultural production systems while also improving human well-being, combating climate change, and protecting our living planet. Hence, for agroecology to be implemented on a large scale, policy makers shall create enabling policy environment and other stakeholders provide sufficient support.

With this in mind, our partners believed that it is crucial to establish a formal institution, the Ethiopia’s sustainable food system and agroecology consortium. The consortium was established in May 2023 by seven like-minded civil society organizations operating in Ethiopia.

Our goal is to mobilize state actors and citizens towards adoption of principles and practices of agroecology-based food systems through awareness raising, experience sharing, movement creation as well as promotion of best practices. Join us and contribute to the creation of agroecology-based sustainable food systems.
