Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium

Our Mission, Goal, and Values – What Drives ESFSAC

At the heart of ESFSAC’s work is a clear mission: to contribute to the creation of agroecology-based sustainable food systems. These are food systems that honour ecological processes, cultural identity, and human dignity — placing people and the environment at the centre of food production and governance. The Consortium believes that such systems are essential for achieving long-term food and nutrition security in Ethiopia.

The overarching goal of ESFSAC is to mobilise both citizens and state actors toward adopting agroecological principles and practices. This is achieved through public awareness, grassroots movement building, policy advocacy, and the promotion of best practices. By creating spaces for collaboration, ESFSAC encourages broad participation in shaping food system policies and initiatives that are just, inclusive, and sustainable.

Guided by six core values — diversity, sustainability, solidarity, justice, sovereignty, and empowerment — the Consortium works to uphold food sovereignty and protect the rights of smallholder farmers and pastoralists. These values are not merely ideals; they are the moral compass behind every programme, campaign, and partnership ESFSAC undertakes. They express a collective belief in equity, community resilience, and the power of local solutions to global challenges.
