The Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium (ESFSAC) is a national civil society alliance dedicated to transforming Ethiopia’s food systems through agroecological principles. Formally established in 2023 and registered with the Authority for Civil Society Organizations in 2024, ESFSAC unites a growing network of organisations committed to ecological sustainability, food justice, and community-led development.
ESFSAC emerged from the Agroecology Network, an informal platform initiated by AgriProFocus and supported by Tufts University of the Netherlands. What began as a shared Google group has grown into a dynamic national platform that fosters collaboration among local actors, amplifies indigenous knowledge, and builds movements for agroecological transformation. ESFSAC now provides a coordinated space for advocacy, knowledge exchange, and multi-stakeholder engagement.
At its core, ESFSAC envisions a future where people- and agroecology-centred food systems prevail. It recognises that Ethiopia’s food heritage and ecological wisdom are vital foundations for building sustainable alternatives to industrial agriculture. Through this movement, the Consortium is laying the groundwork for food systems that nourish both people and the planet, while restoring dignity, equity, and resilience across communities.
